Thank you, Wedgwood families

Dear Wedgwood Families,

You are the reason the world spins in the right direction. To all who joined us for our 2019 A Night in Monte Carlo Auction, thank you! Our goals for the auction were to create a fun event that brings our community together and raise money to create or maintain programs that help our kids continue a path of success at Wedgwood. With your help, we achieved both! Although we don’t have final numbers quite yet, we don’t want another day to go by without letting you know you are appreciated.

Stayed tuned for more…

Lisa West, Auction Chair

Marmots show democracy in action

Thank you to the 182 parents who signed a postcard last week asking our legislators to lift the current “levy lid” and allow our schools to use 100% of the funds that were recently passed by voters (they are currently allowing only 75% of these funds to be used). If this doesn’t happen, Seattle Public Schools will experience a $40 million budget shortfall in the 2019-2020 school year. This will affect all SPS schools, including Wedgwood.

Our fourth graders are headed down to Olympia today for a field trip where they will personally hand off our postcards to our representatives. Go, Marmots, go!

If you did not get a chance to fill out a postcard, please consider contacting one of our District 46 legislators: Senator David Frockt, Representative Gerry Pollet or Representative Javier Valdez. This shortfall doesn’t have to happen, and we need to press our representatives to help our schools access these voter-approved funds.

2019-2020 PTA board openings

Thank you to all Wedgwood parents who have inquired or raised their hand for the 2019-2020 PTA Board! It’s been wonderful to hear from families at all grade levels, moms, dads, professionals and stay-at-home parents. We have such a talented and dedicated community! There are still positions to be filled and we hope to hear from you.

This week’s highlighted Board position is: Secretary. Do organized lists make your heart go pitter-patter? If so, you just may be our next Secretary. This person collects information for monthly meeting agendas and takes minutes during each meeting. You know how we keep saying that not all roles take a huge time commitment? This is one of them, grab it quick!

Questions about a role? Want to attend a meeting and see how it all works? Please contact PTA Vice President (that’s Madame President to the rest of us in 2019-2020): Ann Grodnik –

March is Women's History Month!

March is Women's History Month! Please check out the Diversity and Inclusion bulletin board in the school lobby to learn about the history of two women-founded organizations prominent at our school: Girl Scouts and PTA. Their diverse and progressive backgrounds may surprise you!

In April, we will be featuring home languages of our families. Do you speak a language other than English at home? What is it? How would you write "Caring, Respectful, Responsible" in this language? Please email with your responses.

Our next Diversity and Inclusion Committee meeting is Friday March 29, at 8 a.m. in the school library - anyone can join us!

Wedgwood PTA Speaker Series: Communicating With Kids Through Play

Please mark your calendars for Wednesday, April 24 at 6 p.m. in the Wedgwood library as we welcome Michelle Warsing from Pacific Northwest Play Therapy. Michelle is a licensed family therapist as well as a registered play therapist and will speak to our Wedgwood community about how to utilize children’s language of play to help them process and deal with their life experiences.

Three times a year the PTA invites a speaker to help educate our community on a variety of topics related to having elementary-aged children. This is a busy time in all of our lives and our goal is to give everyone the opportunity to step back and thoughtfully reflect on our relationships within our own families and with our children.

Congratulations, Reflections participants

Our Wedgwood students represented in this year’s Reflections - Heroes Among Usproject. Students submitted art projects exploring their own thoughts, feelings and ideas about the heroes around them. The Reflections project encourages students to develop artistic literacy, increase confidence, and find a love for learning that will help them become more successful in school and in life.

Congratulations to Adam Preizler, State Finalist; Honorable Mentions Cole Krabak, Irisia Eagan, Mikayla Cheng; and all our participants: Amy Liu, Ellie Wilks, Ellie Davis, Gabriel Cheng, Lucas Liu, Sophie Tang, and Zora Roché. Great Work Marmots!

Attention, fifth-grade families!

The date of the fifth-grade promotion has been moved to Friday, June 21 (from the previous Thursday) due to makeup snow days. It will be held at 9 a.m. in the Wedgwood cafeteria.
