This Wednesday! Awesome PTA speaker series event, with free child care
Raise your hand if your child has ever “flipped their lid” at home? OK, I see that’s all of us. But do we always know why? And how to respond to our kids when this happens?
This Wednesday, April 24 at 6 p.m., Michelle Warsing from Pacific Northwest Play Therapy will speak on the topic of "Understanding your child's brain and developing a growth mindset."
Michelle is a licensed family therapist as well as a registered play therapist and will help our Wedgwood community develop and implement tools to better connect with our children and help them process and deal with their life experiences.
Child care will be provided by Wedgwood staff. No need to register in advance.
Three times a year the PTA invites a speaker to help educate our community on a variety of topics related to having elementary-aged children. This is a busy time in all of our lives and our goal is to give everyone the opportunity to step back and thoughtfully reflect on our relationships within our own families and with our children.
Calling all scientists!
Wedgwood’s annual STEM Night is Thursday, May 9, and we are looking for kid and adult scientists to share their background in science or display student poster projects in the cafeteria. The famous egg drop will take place on the playground.
This year, we welcome local scientists from: Pacific Science Center, UW Planetarium, Seattle Audubon Society, Washington Butterfly Association, Sound Bio Lab, Puget Sound Marine Invertebrates, Garfield High School Robotics Club and of course, from right here in our Wedgwood community.
Please mark your calendar now, and visit the STEM page on the PTA website for more information on requirements for student posters and the egg drop.
PTA Executive Board seeks co-treasurer
We are coming down to the wire, Marmots families! This Wednesday evening we will elect our Executive Board for the 2019-2020 school year. We are still looking to fill one critical position: co-Treasurer. This position works in tandem with another PTA Treasurer to collect money from school functions and dispense PTA grants. If you want to help the PTA function smoothly without running an event, this is the role for you! It is consistent work throughout the year, without having to be the face of any single event or activity. Please contact firstname.lastname@example.org with questions.
We also still need a number of other positions. See the full list here.
Wedgwood Night at the Mariners - deadline is this Friday
This Friday, April 26, is the last day to register for the Wedgwood Night at the Mariners game! Join your fellow Marmots on Friday, May 31 as the Mariners take on the Los Angeles Angels at 7:10 p.m. followed by Star Wars Fireworks Night. Tickets are $14/each; order forms went home in kidmail last week, or you can go to the Wedgwood PTA website to order your tickets today!
Get ready to roll! Bike to School Month coming up
May is Bike to School Month here in Seattle, in which Wedgwood Elementary competes with other schools and classrooms compete with each other to see who can rack up the most minutes of bicycling during the month. Any biking anywhere counts – it doesn’t have to be to and from school. So get those bikes tuned up and those helmets checked and get ready to go!
A couple of key dates: On Tuesday, April 30, look for a print calendar in your child's folder where you can track those miles (you'll eventually turn it in). Wednesday, May 8 is Bike to School Day; if your child bikes, look for booths around the playground where they can sign in and get entered to win prizes. We hope to get as much participation as possible that day.
Where to lock bikes: We can continue to have students lock up their bikes at the front of the school or on the fence between the portables and the main building. Another area that could work is the fence between the staff parking lot and the kindergarten classroom windows.
Please contribute photos to the yearbook!
The Wedgwood yearbook needs your photos by April 26 (new deadline!)! Upload images from the school year directly to the yearbook portal to be considered for inclusion in the 2018-19 book. We're looking for candid shots of kids having fun, learning, and growing at Wedgwood and at any Wedgwood-related activity this year. We have lots of room in the yearbook this year and strive to show every student in the school.
Follow the instructions below to upload photos.
Extra credit if you tag the kids in each image (list them separated by commas) and indicate the class (by teacher name not room number) or event (such as Move-a-Thon, winter concert, cultural festival, etc).
Email Lori Kelley at WedgwoodYearbookSea@gmail.com with questions!

Mighty Movers needs you!
Every Monday at lunch recess, kids in grades K-3 have an opportunity to earn foot charms by running around the track. The kiddos love this activity and ask me "when is the next time this is happening?" If we don’t have enough volunteers we need to cancel. Help us out and sign up here. There are only a few more Monday lunch recesses when we will do Mighty Movers. Don’t let our kiddos down!
Mondays from 11:40 a.m.-12:30 p.m. on the playground.

Spring garden work party, May 11
Mark your calendar and grab your garden gloves, Saturday, May 11, 12-3pm
Join us for a Spring Garden Work Party! We will be weeding, pruning, beautifying, hauling out the old, and bringing in the new! Come gather with your neighbors, enjoy cookies & lemonade and help our School Garden thrive. All are welcome, no experience required.
We have plenty of garden tools and a district provided yard waste dumpster to fill!
Thank you Marmots for your help keeping your Wedgwood garden and school grounds maintained.
Run away to the Carnival! (Psst: great volunteer opp)
Planning is underway for the Wedgwood Carnival, which happens on June 1! Want to help make this family-friendly event a success? We are looking for a few area leads to be in charge of things like food set-up, entertainment, and crafts. These positions are great if you're planning to attend the carnival anyway and have a couple hours beforehand to make sure it runs smoothly.
African objects on loan from Seattle Art Museum
By now, you may have noticed some amazing African objects (a stool, a mask, jewelry, sculpture, textiles...) on display in the case outside the office. Until April 25, we'll have the items available to visit classrooms with art docents. It's part of the suitcase program that SAM has, where a library of items and lessons are available for educators to check out, effectively bringing the museum to the school.
We will have two more suitcases coming this year: Northwest Art and Culture May 13-23rd and Australia/Oceania June 10-21.
Keep an eye out in the weekly for reminders and reach out to Annick firstname.lastname@example.org if you'd like the items to come to your room.
Let's help Mr. Dugdale - we need a few more meal volunteers
With more than 100 4th and 5th graders enrolled in the instrumental music program at Wedgwood, many of you are familiar with the amazing Alex Dugdale. Earlier this school year, his partner suffered a stroke and our families have been helping them with meals twice a week.
Now that we're into spring, the sign-up genius needs a few more volunteers to pitch in: nothing fancy, just some simple home-cooked food in containers you don't need back. Let's help them through this rough time.
