School Budget Updates

Wedgwood is in budget season for the 2023-2024 school year. The building leadership team (BLT) and principal spent February and March analyzing different budget scenarios. Wedgwood’s current budget is available here.  The BLT is responsible for submitting a school budget that aligns with the Continuous School Improvement Plan (CSIP) for Wedgwood and Racial Equity Action Plan.  It must comply with all collective bargaining agreements.  The district allocates staffing and funding based on the projected number of students and student characteristics.  The district is predicting that Wedgwood will have a decrease in enrollment from 370 this year to 319 for next year.  The budget is voted on by all staff.  The district has additional information and an FAQ available here.

What is the Building Leadership Team (BLT)?

  • Who: Wedgwood teachers and staff.  The PTA has one parent representative on the BLT as well.  BLT meetings are open to anyone.  While anyone may attend BLT meetings, note that attendees are meant to be observers of the proceedings.  If parents have specific questions or concerns, they should contact Principal Smith outside of a BLT meeting.

  • What: The BLT makes school-wide decisions.  This includes academic initiatives, budget, and other issues related to school governance.

  • When: The BLT meets monthly during the school year and more often as needed.  See the PTA calendar or contact the school for BLT meeting dates.

  • Where: Wedgwood Elementary

PTA Budget Updates

The PTA is also in budget season to prepare for the 2023-2024 school year.  Here is an overview of the process, and where we are at:

  • Jan 2023: The PTA sent a survey requesting family feedback to inform the PTA budget building process.

  •  Feb 2023: PTA budget committee reviewed the current budget and used this to build next year’s budget.  Key points of discussion included the following: projected decreased enrollment, #TakeBackPTA Resolution, auction, staff funding, participation in a joint fundraiser/joining the North End Seattle School PTA Alliance (NESSPA), and overall communication & transparency between the PTA and the school.

  •  3/13 PTA Board Meeting: The treasurer presented an overview of the budget committee work. An advisory vote supported keeping staff funding the same plus applying an anticipated surplus, coming to a total of $81,000 for staff funding for next year.  Approval of the final budget is pending a vote by PTA members in April.

  • PTA Board Meeting 4/17 @ 6:30pm: This working meeting is open to all.  The budget will be reviewed again.  The board will vote on presenting the proposed budget to the general PTA membership. Join us online or in-person to learn more about the budget or give feedback!

  • April General Membership Meeting (4/25 @ 6:30pm): Join us for this semi-annual meeting! All PTA members will vote on both the budget & executive board positions for next year.  After the meeting, all PTA members will receive an electronic ballot.
