Support the Wedgwood Library through our Read-a-thon!

Did you know that up until this year, the Wedgwood Library had been 100% funded by our parent community?

Our collection of books has been purchased through a yearly PTA grant and the profits generated from our past book fairs. Although book fairs can be fun for some students, the goals of the book fair (purchasing books vs. encouraging reading), do not align with the mission of our library and school community. To continue to provide high-quality, high-interest, diverse books to our students, our library needs your support!

This month, our library in partnership with our PTA will be running a Read-a-thon. This year our goal is to raise $5,000 for our library collection. By participating in our Read-a-thon, students will have access to additional check-outs in December and will help raise money by reading over Winter Break. Money raised during this fundraiser will go toward:

  • Replacing well-loved favorite titles that are falling apart.

  • Adding new titles to our collection that continue to spark a love for reading in our students and support our classroom instruction.

  • Fill gaps in our collection by replacing lost or missing books.

  • Update our nonfiction collection with books that show diverse perspectives and accurate information.

  • Any additional funds over $5,000 will go towards reducing the cost of field trips for all families this year school year.

As you can imagine, the cost of maintaining a library can be expensive. The average cost of a book used in a library is between $20-$25. Although Seattle Schools has agreed to give $9 per student to each school library beginning this year, that funding will not fully meet the needs of our library.

Your child should have brought home a bright pink paper with details on how to participate in this fun event. The form is also available for download

Please reach out to Kristi Leland at klleland@seattleschools.org if you would like more information or have any questions. Thank you for your support!
